MINUTES OF MEETING OF DIRECTORS

OF

COLUMBUS OHIO DIVISION, USFA, INC. 

March 16, 2008

            A meeting of the Board of Directors of COLUMBUS OHIO DIVISION, USFA, INC. was held at the law offices of Joseph Streb at approximately 7:30 PM on the 16th day of March, 2008.

            The meeting was called to order by the Chairman, Joseph S. Streb.

ROLL:  A roll of Directors was taken and it was reported that, pursuant to Article VI(A) of the Amended Bylaws, a quorum did exist. The following Board members and invited guests were present:

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:  The minutes of the meeting of December 30th, 2007 were  unanimously approved. 

 

OFFICER'S REPORTS:

 

Chairman --  Joseph Streb:  Mr. Streb reported that the USFA National organization seems to once again find itself in financial trouble. He also noted that most of this meeting would be spent on matters concerning the upcoming Great Lakes Sectional Championship.

 

Secretary – Doug Bliss:   Mr. Bliss reported that Dublin Sport Fencing Center has moved to a new location at 6561 Dublin Center Road. He also noted that several email inquiries have been received concerning the date and time of events to be held for the Sectional Championship. Several of the COD Uhlmann reels are in need of replacement parts, which will be ordered and installed shortly.

 

Treasurer -- Fred Hunker:  With respect to finances, the Treasurer reported:

Vice Chairman --  Mark Hedien:   Absent. No report.

 

2nd Vice Chairman – Jeffrey Wilson:  Absent. No report.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS: 

 

Referee Committee – Mr. Streb noted that no competitive bouts would be used for referee practical examination at the Sectional Qualifier. It may be possible for referees to improve their rating by practical examination during using ad hoc, non-competitive bouts.  

 

Nominating Committee (Streb, Simonian, Wilson):  Betty Brown will vacate her post after the conclusion of this season. Two additional candidates have been proposed for Board membership, namely Tony Goh Sr. and Ingrid Biederman. 

 

MATTERS OF DISCUSSION (No Formal Action):

 

            1.  Copper Strips:  There was discussion as to whether some of the Division's copper strips should be sold as scrap metal, but no formal action was taken. A general feeling was that perhaps the true scrap strip material could be sold but the usable strips should be kept for now.

 

OLD BUSINESS: 

 

            (1).   OFFICIAL COD EVENT CALENDAR 2007-2008:

           

            BE IT RESOLVED, that the 2007-2008 schedule of COD and other notable fencing events will be as follows:    

 

  Nov 17, 2007 Junior Olympics Qualifier #
  Dec 1-2, 2007 Dr. Todd Curn Memorial (Sectional Circuit event)
  Feb 2-3, 2008 Ohio High School Championships
  Mar 2, 2008 Arnold Fencing Classic * and Regional Youth Circuit
  Apr 5, 2008 Division II/III Qualifier #
  May 3-4, 2008 Great Lakes Sectional Championships

 

*    Non-COD event, being put on schedule for reference purposes.

#    Participants must sign-up electronically by the date specified on the website.

 

 

            (2).  INSURANCE ON COD EQUIPMENT:  At the June 24, 2007 meeting, Sam Lillard was authorized to do all things necessary and proper ascertain the cost of obtaining insurance on COD equipment.  He was not present, and thus, we continue to await his report.

 

            (3).  2007-2008 GREAT LAKES SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP:   The proposed schedule of events (the same as that used for the past two seasons in Kentucky and Southwest Ohio Divisions) was accepted and will be published on AskFRED by Mr. Bliss. 

 

            (4).  JUNIOR OLYMPIC QUALIFIER AWARDS:   Mr. Bliss generated Award Certificates for all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place fencers. The Award Certificates may be picked up Dublin Sport Fencing Center.

 

 

NEW BUSINESS:

 

            (1).   CERTIFICATION OF RESULTS FROM EVENTS:  The results of the following events were unanimously certified:

                                    -- January 5        Blood in the Snow

                                    -- January 13      Good Call Open

                                    -- February 2-3  Ohio High School Championships Junior Olympics Qualifiers

                                    -- February 16    Protect Your Nuts

                                    -- March 2          Arnold Fencing Classic and Regional Youth Circuit

MISCELLANEOUS:

              (1).   OSU VARSITY FENCING:   WHEREAS The Ohio State University Varsity Fencing Team has just won the NCAA Championship

          BE IT RESOLVED, that Columbus Ohio Division USFA extends its congratulations to the coaching staff and fencers of the Ohio State University. Well Done!
The resolution was unanimously and enthusiastically passed.

            (2).  The next meeting was set for Sunday, April 20, 2008 at 7:30 P.M. at the law office of Joseph Streb, 736 Neil Ave., Columbus, Ohio, Ph: 224-0200.

ADJOURNMENT:  A motion to adjourn was made, seconded, and unanimously passed.
